Goal:
To evaluate various career and certification opportunities related to medical coding and billing.
Description:
This lesson outlines several medical coding and billing career pathways and illustrates the benefits and requirements for both entry careers and advanced careers which use coding and billing as a foundation.
Objectives:
1. To define the field of medical coding and billing.
2. To examine the job outlook for careers in medical coding and billing.
3. To identify job opportunities in medical coding and billing.
4. To discuss job duties and tasks associated with identified opportunities.
5. To identify certifications for the medical coding and billing field.

Essential Questions:
1. What is the difference between a medical biller and a medical coder?
2. What factors affect certification decisions?
Step 1: Bell Ringer:
• Provide students three to five minutes to think about and answer the following: Imagine you have successfully earned a certification in medical coding and/or billing and are working in your first job. Describe how you feel after accomplishing this goal. How does your success affect the rest of your life?
Step 2: Distribute the Action Plan, Vocabulary Handout and Key Concepts.
• The Action Plan lays out a list of tasks for students to complete during the lesson.
• The Vocabulary Handout is a list of terms used throughout the lesson.
• The Key Concepts is an outline that identifies the main ideas presented in the lesson which students can fill in to aid in notetaking during the lesson.
Step 3: Show the Overview PowerPoint® segment.
· This segment is 12 slides long.
• Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.
Step 4: Administer the Overview Check for Understanding.

• Students will create an audio podcast episode to report on the different types of careers in medical coding and billing. The podcast will be one episode in a collective podcast.

· Have students pair-share and discuss what surprised them about the steps involved in preparing for and maintaining a career in medical coding and billing.

Step 1: Bell Ringer:
• Have students brainstorm answers to the question, “what are the job opportunities in the career field of medical coding and billing”. List student ideas on the board.
Step 2: Show slides to 13 to 20 of the Job Opportunities in Medical Coding & Billing PowerPoint® segment.
• This portion of the segment is eight slides long.
• Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.
Step 3: Students should complete the Job Posting Scavenger Hunt Activity.
· Students will investigate various job boards to locate job postings and job descriptions for medical coders and billers.
Step 4: Exit Ticket:
• Lead students to share their findings and reflections from the Job Posting Scavenger Hunt Activity with the class.

Step 1: Bell Ringer:
• Post the job positions, insurance claims specialist and denial specialist for students to see. Instruct students to write down two job duties for each position. Lead students to share their responses with the class.
Step 2: Show slides 21 to 35 of the Job Opportunities in Medical Coding & Billing PowerPoint® segment.
• This portion of the segment is 15 slides long.
• Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.
Step 3: Administer the Job Opportunities in Medical Coding & Billing Check for Understanding.

• Post the acronyms, AHIMA and AAPC on the board. Have students guess what the letters stand for. Have students confirm their answers by using the internet to look them up.

• This segment is 20 slides long.
• Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.
Step 3: Administer the Professional Certifications & Organizations in Medical Coding & Billing Check for Understanding.

• The Final Assessment is a comprehensive assessment covering material throughout the entire lesson.
Step 3: Students should complete the Careers in Coding and Billing Podcast Project.
• Students will create an audio podcast episode to report on the different types of careers in medical coding and billing. The podcast will be one episode in a collective podcast.
Step 4: Exit Ticket:
• As time allows, play student podcasts for the class.
Activity Overview
Job Posting Scavenger Hunt Activity
Students will investigate various job boards to locate job postings and job descriptions for medical coders and billers. This activity will allow students to see real-world job postings, qualifications and salaries of medical coding and billing positions.
Accommodations:
Provide students with a list of job board sites to use for their investigation.
Modifications:
Reduce the amount of job posting descriptions required. Allow students to complete the reflection orally.
Extension:
Have students write a job description that would appeal to someone looking for a career in either medical coding, medical billing or a combined position.
Project Overview
Careers in Coding & Billing Podcast
In groups, students will create an audio podcast episode to report on the different types of careers in medical coding and billing. The podcast will be one episode in a collective podcast. This project supports all of the objectives of the lesson collectively and provides students a creative way to organize and summarize learning.
Accommodations:
Provide examples of podcasts and a list of resources to assist students with their research.
Modifications:
Reduce the requirements of the assignment as appropriate for individual students.
Extension:
As a part of the podcast, have students perform a role play of a job interview. Instruct students to have one group member play the part of an interviewer and another member play the role of a job seeker looking for a position as a medical coder or biller.
