Design & Patent It!

Project Overview:

You will design a new product, specifically paying attention to the quality, safety and reliability of the product. After completing the design portion, you will complete a mock patent application.

Directions:

Phase 1 – Planning:

1. Brainstorm and research various ideas for a product you would like to invent and patent.

2. Choose a few ideas which you feel can be fully developed.

3. Begin the product design process by describing or sketching two different products in the space provided.

4. For each product, list potential pros and cons, and the need each product fulfills.

5. Think carefully about your ideas and pick the one you think is most useful, feasible and novel. You will be using this idea throughout the rest of the project.

Phase 2 – Drawings:

1. Review the information about orthographic projections below:

·       Engineers use line drawing of different viewpoints, called orthographic projections, to accurately represent a three-dimensional object on paper.

2. In the space provided, create the front, top and side views of the product. These drawings will be submitted with your patent application. You may use additional paper if necessary.

Phase 3 – Preliminary Design Review (PDR):

1. Follow your instructor’s directions to identify a partner to work with.

2. With your partner, discuss each other’s invention and determine whether your designs ensure maximum safety, reliability and quality to the end user.

·       What need does your product fulfill

·       In what ways will safety of the consumer be ensured while using this product

·       What measures will be taken to ensure this product is reliable

·       What will be done to ensure quality of the product

3. As you and your partner review your invention, answer the corresponding questions in the space provided.

Phase 4 - Patent It:

1. Complete a patent application for your invention using the Patent Application Student Handout.

2. To complete the Information Disclosure Statement, complete the following:

·       Fill out the chart by researching approved U.S. Patents, U.S. Patent Application Publications, and Non-Patent Literature (including brochures, articles, books and other publications)

·       List the appropriate information in the appropriate boxes. Be thorough in your research, but you may not find three publications for each section.

·       The instructor will initial each listing when verified

3. Turn in the completed product, including the patent application, according to your instructor’s directions.
