Microsoft 365® Word Advanced: Basic Tasks Review Concepts

Goal:

To expand upon students’ foundational knowledge in Microsoft® Word.

 

Description:

This lesson provides students with a review of basic tasks and skills, including the layout of the program, methods for opening documents and templates, customizing the program window, techniques for entering text, keyboard shortcuts, methods of closing and distributing documents and formatting graphics.

 

Objectives:

1.    To review concepts covered in the Microsoft 365® Word Basics units.

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students write down and discuss ways in which Microsoft® Word can be utilized in everyday life.

Step 2: Distribute the Action Plan, Vocabulary Handout and Key Concepts.

·         The Action Plan lays out a list of tasks for students to complete during the lesson.

·         The Vocabulary Handout is a list of terms used throughout the lesson.

·         The Key Concepts is an outline which identifies the main ideas presented in the lesson which students can fill in to aid in note taking during the lesson.

Step 3: Show slides 1 to 38 of the Review PowerPoint® segment.

·         This portion of the segment is 38 slides long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 4: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should write down at least two tabs from the ribbon and explain their purpose. For example, the File tab opens the Backstage View.

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Ask students to list three ways text can be formatted. Have a few students share their answers.

Step 2: Show slides 39 to 57 of the Review PowerPoint® segment.

·         This portion of the segment is 19 slides long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 3: Students should complete the Basic Concepts & Skills Review Activity.

·         Students will identify and label the parts of the word window, identify the correct commands for each tab on the Ribbon and match the keyboard shortcut with the command it completes.

Step 4: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should turn in the Basic Concepts & Skills Review Activity.

Convention Center Letterhead Project

 

Essential Questions:

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students write down and discuss the different document properties which can be formatted using the Design tab, such as themes.

Step 2: Show slides 58 to 72 of the Review PowerPoint® segment.

·         This portion of the segment is 15 slides long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 3: Students should complete the Convention Center Letterhead Project.

·         Students will use a new, blank document and the Student File to develop a letterhead for the Atomsville Convention Center based on the instructions specified.

·         Students should discuss, as a class, the different types of graphical elements which can be inserted into a document.

Step 2: Show slides 73 to 93 of the Review PowerPoint® segment.

·         This portion of the segment is 21 slides long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 3: Exit Ticket:

·         Have students list the steps for inserting a picture on a piece of paper and turn it in before leaving class.

Essential Questions:

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Prior to class, write the term “text wrapping” on the board from the lesson. Instruct students to write down a definition of the term on the board in their own words. Ask a few students to share their definitions with the class.

Step 2: Show slides 94 to 107 of the Review PowerPoint® segment.

·         This portion of the segment is 14 slides long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 3: Students should complete the Convention Center Envelopes & Labels Project.

·         Students will use a new, blank document to develop envelopes and labels based on the instructions specified.

Step 4: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should turn in their Convention Center Envelopes & Labels Project.

 

Class 6

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Prior to class, write the question, “what stuck with you” on the board. As students arrive, give each student a sticky note. Instruct students to write their answers on their sticky note and stick it to the board around the question. Read the answers out loud to the class.

·         Have students write down three statements about the topics covered in the videos: two truths and a lie. Once completed, have students exchange statements with a partner to figure out which statement is the lie.

Business Interest Project

 

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Students should review their notes to prepare for the check for understanding and project.

Step 2: Administer the Review of Basic Concepts Check for Understanding.

·         The check for understanding is a short review of the content presented in the lesson.

Step 3: Students should complete the Business Interest Report Project.

·         Students will edit and format the Student File based on the instructions provided in the project.

Step 4: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should turn in their Business Interest Report Project.

 

Activity Overview

Basic Concepts & Skills Review Activity

Students will identify and label the parts of the word window, identify the correct commands for each tab on the Ribbon and identify and match the keyboard shortcut with the command it completes.

 

Accommodations:

Students should complete each question in groups of five. After each group, students should show the instructor to ensure the questions are completed correctly.

 

Modifications:

In question one, provide students with A, C, D, E and I already labeled on the Word window. In question two, provide students with at least one of the correct commands for each tab. In question three, provide students with at least half of the keyboard shortcuts matched to the correct command it completes.

 

Extension:

In question one, students should label at least three more components of the Word window. In question two, students should add at least two additional commands found in each tab of the ribbon. In question three, provide only keyboard shortcut and have students fill in the correct command it completes.

 

Project Overview

Convention Center Letterhead

Students will use a new, blank document to develop a letterhead for the Atomsville Convention Center based on the instructions specified. The Convention Center Letterhead Convention Center Logo Student File will be used to develop a letterhead for the Atomsville Convention Center based on the instructions specified in the project.

After each step, students should show the instructor to ensure the steps are completed correctly.

 

Modifications:

Provide students with the downloadable files prior to beginning the assignment, then students should continue from step two.

 

Extension:

Provide students with a time limit to complete the project. Providing students with a time limit will help prepare them for Microsoft 365® Word certification exams.

Business Interest Report

Students will edit and format the designated Student Files based on the instructions specified. They will use a blank document, the Business Interest Report Student File and the Business Interest Report The Element Logo Student File to develop a chart, SmartArt and text block based on the instructions specified.
