Goal:

To explore the aspects of time management and goal-setting strategies.

 

Description:

This lesson examines time management tools and setting short-term and long-term goals to optimize efficiency and results.

 

Objectives:

1.    To define time management.

2.    To apply effective time management skills by prioritizing tasks, following schedules, delegating tasks and goal setting.

3.    To distinguish between short-term and long-term goals.

4.    To demonstrate time management skills by setting goals to optimize efficiency and results.

Essential Questions:

1.    What is time management?

2.    How can time management skills be used to prioritize and delegate tasks, follow schedules and set goals?

 

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Ask students the following question, then lead them to share their thoughts with the class.

-        What is time management, and why is it important?

Step 2: Distribute the Action Plan, Vocabulary Handout and Key Concepts.

·         The Action Plan lays out a list of tasks for students to complete during the lesson.

·         The Vocabulary Handout is a list of terms used throughout the lesson.

·         The Key Concepts is an outline which identifies the main ideas presented in the lesson which students can fill in to aid in note taking during the lesson.

Step 3: Show the Techniques for Effective Time Management PowerPoint® segment.

·         This segment is 24 slides long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 4: Administer the Techniques for Effective Time Management Check for Understanding.

·         The check for understanding is a short review of the content presented in the segment.

Step 5: Students complete the Weekly Task List Activity.

·         Students will evaluate tasks to determine their priority and write a task list.

·         If students do not complete the activity in class, assign it as homework.

Step 6: Exit Ticket:

·         Have students turn in the Weekly Task List Activity.

·         Turn & Talk: Students will turn to a partner to discuss the following prompt for two minutes:

-        What is the difference between short-term and long-term goals?

Step 2: Show the Techniques for Effective Goal Setting PowerPoint® segment.

·         This segment is 13 slides long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

·         Slide 29: Lead a student discussion about identifying short-term goals they set for this week.

Step 3: Administer the Techniques for Effective Goal Setting Check for Understanding.

·         The check for understanding is a short review of the content presented in the segment.

Step 4: Students should complete the How Do You Manage Your Time Activity.

·         Students will reflect on their time management habits, identify areas of improvement and set goals for more effective time management.

Step 5: Exit Ticket:

·         Have students turn in the How Do You Manage Your Time Activity.

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Students should brainstorm one or two long-term goals and then consider how the goals might relate to potential careers. Lead students to share their thoughts with the class.

Step 2: Students should begin the Career Interview Project.

·         Students will interview an individual in a career field which they are interested in and write an essay explaining their findings.

Step 3: Exit Ticket:

·         Have students complete the Progress Report Exit Ticket Activity and turn it in.

Career Interview Project

 

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Students will review their notes to prepare for the assessment.

Step 2: Administer the Advanced Business Skills: Time Management Final Assessment.

·         The assessment is a comprehensive assessment covering material throughout the entire lesson.

Step 3: Students should complete the Career Interview Project.

·         Students will interview an individual in a career field which they are interested in and write an essay explaining their findings.

Step 4: Exit Ticket:

·         Have students turn in the Career Interview Project.

 

Activity Overview

Weekly Task List

Students will evaluate tasks to determine their priority and write a task list.

 

Accommodations:

Allow for extra time for completion.

 

Modifications:

Provide students with an example of a weekly task list then instruct them to evaluate each task for priority, importance and urgency.

 

Extension:

Allow students to expand their weekly task list to a monthly task list.

 

 

How Do You Manage Your Time

Students will reflect on their time management habits, identify areas of improvement and set goals for more effective time management.

 

Accommodations:

Allow for extra time for completion.

 

Modifications:

Provide students with a detailed list of time management habits and areas of improvement to choose from.

 

Extension:

Allow students to expand their goals by using the SMARTER goal criteria.

 

Project Overview

Career Interview

Students will interview someone in a career field which they are interested in and write an essay explaining their findings.

 

Accommodations:

Allow for extra time for completion.

 

Modifications:

Provide students with a list of open-ended questions to ask during the interview.

 

Extension:

Allow students to present their findings to the class.
