Goal:

To explain the importance of preparation and practice before participating in an interview.

 

Description:

This lesson explains the importance of preparation and practice and guides students through preparation strategies. The need to research the company and position are discussed. In addition, common interview questions are revealed and analyzed.

 

Objectives:

1.    To explain the importance of preparation and practice before an interview.

2.    To discuss the need to research the company and position the interview address.

3.    To analyze a few common interview questions.

Essential Questions:

1.    What are the best strategies to prepare for a job interview?

2.    What are some common interview questions for which you should prepare?

3.    Why is preparation for a job interview important?

 

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students share any experiences they have had with job or college entrance interviews.

Step 2: Distribute the Action Plan, Vocabulary Handout and Key Concepts.

·         The Action Plan lays out a list of tasks for students to complete during the lesson.

·         The Vocabulary Handout is a list of terms used throughout the lesson.

·         The Key Concepts is an outline which identifies the main ideas presented in the lesson which students can fill in to aid in note taking during the lesson.

Step 3: Show the Formulas for Career Success: Interview Preparation video segment.

·         This video is 14 minutes long.

·         Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 4: Students should complete the Interview Research Activity.

·         Students will work in groups of three to four to find a job opening which interests them, then complete research to find information for several categories.

Step 5: Exit Ticket:

·         Have students work with a partner to discuss what the consequences of not preparing for an interview might be. Students should write down two examples to share with the class.

Common Interview Questions Project

 

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students review their Key Concepts to prepare for the assessment.

Step 2: Administer the Formulas for Career Success: Interview Preparation Assessment.

·         The Assessment is a comprehensive assessment covering material throughout the entire lesson.

Step 3: Students should complete the Common Interview Questions Project.

·         Students will develop answers to common interview questions tailored to the job opening and their abilities.

Step 4: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should turn in their projects.

 

Activity Overview

Interview Research

Students will work in a group of three to four to find a job opening which interests them, then complete research to find information for several categories.

 

Accommodations:

Provide students with additional time to complete the activity.

 

Modifications:

Allow students to find the answers to the first three questions under “Learn about the organization” and the first two questions under “Learn about the position.”

 

Extension:   

Have students complete the activity for an additional job opening and write a half page report comparing the information they found from the two job openings.

 

Project Overview

Common Interview Questions

Students will develop answers to common interview questions tailored to the job opening and their abilities.

 

Accommodations:

Provide students with a quiet space to work.

 

Modifications:

Allow students to answer the listed interview questions as directed but do not require them to develop their own questions and subsequent answers.

 

Extension:   

Have students work with a partner to complete a mock interview. One student will act as the interviewer and the other as the interviewee. Students will complete the mock interview in front of the class as an additional example to prepare the class for interviews.
