Tech Apps Challenge: Pathways to Career Success Game

 

Introduction

This lesson challenges students to create a board game with ten cards containing positive life scenarios and ten cards with obstacle scenarios or roadblocks which will be used in the game.

 

All materials are open-ended to allow flexibility to fit classroom needs. Students will research and design a board game. Students may utilize the included activity, as needed, to plan, build and assess their design during the project.

 

Objectives:

1.    To apply researching and writing skills to create an outlined plan for a board game.

2.    To understand and identify concepts related to drafting and design.

3.    To create a board game which displays future pathway choices.

 

Instructors can determine the best length of time for the project based on the student abilities and available class time.

 

Project Scope & Sequence

Introduction to the Challenge

The introduction should be one class period. Students will review the expectations of the challenge.

 

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Ask students the question, “What types of obstacles could occur as you grow into an adult, and how could you overcome them” and have them write down their initial thoughts.

Step 2: Show the Tech Apps Challenge: Pathways to Career Success Game video segment.

·         This segment is one minute long.

Step 3: Provide students with the Tech Apps Challenge: Pathways to Career Success Game Project.

·         Students have been challenged to create a board game and scenario cards.

·         Read aloud the directions and provide any additional requirements you have for the project.

Step 4: Allow students to ask any questions about the project.

Step 5: Provide students with due dates for each section of the project to enter into their project.

Step 6: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should complete the Introduction to the Pathways to Career Success Game Challenge portion of the project.

 

Complete Brainstorm for the Pathways to Career Success Game

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students write down at least three sentences about where they see themselves in ten years. 

Step 2: Students should complete the Pathways to Career Success Game Brainstorm portion of the project.

Step 3: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should provide a progress update on the Pathways to Career Success Game Brainstorm portion of the project.

 

Pathways to Career Success Game Development

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students answer the Question of the Day:

-        Why is important to overcome obstacles as you continue down your pathway to success?

·         Discuss as a class.

Step 2: Students should complete the Pathways to Career Success Game Development portion of the project.

Step 3: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should provide a progress update on the Pathways to Career Success Game Development portion of the project.

 

Pathways to Career Success Game Creation

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students write down five positive choices they could make which would result in career success. Allow students to share their answers.

Step 2: Students should create their game design.

·         Make sure students have access to the technology required to draw a mock game digitally.

Step 3: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should provide their saved design prior to moving on to the next portion of the project.

 

Personal Pathways to Career Success Evaluation & Improvement

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·         Have students identify five items to look for when editing a digital drawing or design.

Step 2: Students should complete the Personal Pathways to Career Success Game Evaluation and the Pathways to Career Success Game Improvement portions of the project.

Step 3: Exit Ticket:

·         Students should submit their game board, game design planning documents and completed project.

 

Accommodations, Modifications & Extensions

Accommodations:

Increase the frequency of instructor check-ins. Provide sentence starters for the Bell Ringer prompts.

 

Modifications:

Provide students with a list of possible scenarios to choose from and with an outline shell to assist in organizing thoughts. Provide students assistance with the Pathways to Career Success Development portion of the lesson.

 

Extension:

Students can publish their games to a school website or be featured in a digital school newsletter.
