Stranded with Simple Machines

Project Overview:

You will use your understanding of simple machines to identify items from a shipwreck and the environment to help escape a deserted island in the tropics.

Directions:

1.    Imagine you are a castaway shipwrecked on a deserted island in the tropics. Participate in a class discussion to create a list of items or materials which could be salvaged from a shipwreck on a deserted island in the tropics.

2.    Find a partner and discuss how the materials the class identified could be used to create a shelter on the island.

3.    In the space below, describe at least two different methods of how a simple machine could help you build a shelter using the identified materials. Include a drawing to show how the simple machines could be created using the shipwrecked materials.

4.    Find a different partner to discuss how the materials the class identified could be used to find or manage food and water on the island. This may include locating, moving, storing or cooking the food.

5.    In the space below, describe at least two different methods of how a simple machine could help you find or manage food and water on the island. Include a drawing to show how the simple machines could be created using the shipwrecked materials.

6.    Once completed, turn in your project according to your instructor’s directions.
