Robotics Engineers: Collaboration

Lesson Overview

Media: Video (9 minutes)

Seat Time: 3 Classes | 150 minutes teaching

Goal:

To establish and participate in a collaborative robotics engineering team.

Description:

This lesson introduces students to considerations for effective collaboration on a robotics engineering team. Students will explore setting team norms and procedures, developing a shared vision, establishing SMART goals, assigning roles and tasks and managing conflict.

Objectives:

1.    To demonstrate team collaboration to solve problems and make decisions.

2.    To describe the principles of teamwork in the robotics field.

3.    To identify the variety of perspectives from working in a team setting.

Class 1

Class Overview:

Robotics Engineers: Collaboration Video Segment

Action Plan

Vocabulary Handout

Key Concepts

Collaborative Engineering Project

Essential Questions:

1.    How do robotic engineering teams establish a collaborative environment?

2.    What tasks ensure team collaboration is set up effectively?

3.    What are the elements of an effective team?

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·       Have students brainstorm answers to the following question, then lead students to discuss their responses:

-     How does a team create a collaborative environment?

Step 2: Distribute the Action Plan, Vocabulary Handout and Key Concepts.

·       The Action Plan lays out a list of tasks for students to complete during the lesson.

·       The Vocabulary Handout is a list of terms used throughout the lesson.

·       The Key Concepts is an outline which identifies the main ideas presented in the lesson which students can fill in to aid in note taking during the lesson.

Step 3: Show the Robotics Engineers: Collaboration video segment.

·       This video is nine minutes long.

·       Be sure to utilize the Key Concepts for this segment of the lesson.

Step 4: Students should begin the Collaborative Engineering Project.

·       Students will practice positive team collaboration to solve a robotics engineering problem.

Step 5: Exit Ticket:

·       Students will stay in their groups from the Collaborative Engineer Project. As a team, they should discuss how collaboration went during class today and how they can improve for tomorrow.

Class 2

Class Overview:

Action Plan

Collaborative Engineering Project

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·       Students will join their team members for the Collaborative Engineering Project. Have the individual in the team lead role facilitate a discussion on their project progress so far.

Step 2: Students should continue the Collaborative Engineering Project.

·       Students will practice positive team collaboration to solve a robotics engineering problem.

Step 3: Exit Ticket:

·       Quick Write: Students should respond to the following question in three to four sentences:

-    What do you like and dislike about your role in the Collaborative Engineering Project?

Class 3

Diverse Teams Mind Map Bell Ringer Activity

Robotics Engineers: Collaboration Assessment

Collaborative Engineering Project

Collaborative Team Evaluation Exit Ticket Activity

Step 1: Bell Ringer:

·       Have students create a mind map highlighting the variety of voices and perspectives of a diverse team in the Diverse Teams Mind Map Bell Ringer Activity.

·       If time permits, allow students to share some ideas from their activity with the class.

Step 2: Administer the Robotics Engineers: Collaboration Assessment.

·       The assessment is a comprehensive assessment covering material throughout the entire lesson.

Step 3: Students should complete the Collaborative Engineering Project.

·       Students will practice positive team collaboration to solve a robotics engineering problem.

Step 4: Exit Ticket:

·       Have students evaluate themselves and their team in the Collaborative Team Evaluation Exit Ticket Activity.

Project Overview

Collaborative Engineering

Students will practice positive team collaboration to solve a robotics engineering problem. Students will learn to set norms and procedures, align on a vision, create a SMART goal, assign roles and tasks, and handle conflict as a team. Students will select an engineering problem to solve, select a design solution, develop a plan to create and test the selection solution, and perform individual roles and tasks assigned by their team. This project allows students to practice working in a collaborative environment while solving problems.

Accommodations:

Provide examples of team norms and procedures for groups to pick from.

Assign roles and tasks to students.

Modifications:

Have students observe a robotics engineering team and how they work together. Then, have students write a reflection on how the content learned was displayed in the robotics engineering team.

Extension:

Have students outline team collaboration steps to use on their next team robotics engineering challenge.
