Career Challenge: Résumé Remix
Introduction
Media: Video (1 minute)
This lesson challenges students to create their own media-based résumés using various formats such as videos, websites or social media profiles. In today's digital age, media-based résumés have become increasingly valuable for showcasing skills and experience in a creative and engaging manner. Students will develop a media-based résumé showcasing their skills, achievements and personality in an engaging and creative way.
All materials are open-ended to allow flexibility to fit classroom needs. Students will research examples of résumés and create a media-based résumé utilizing technology to enhance interest.
Objectives:
1. To understand the purpose and importance of a media-based résumé.
2. To develop media and communication skills by creating and designing a visually appealing and informative media-based résumé.
3. To showcase personal skills, experience and interests effectively through the chosen media format.
4. To gain awareness of how to tailor a media-based résumé to a target audience or job opportunity.
Instructors can determine the best length of time for the project based on the students’ abilities and available class time.
Project Scope & Sequence
Introduction to the Challenge
Class Overview:
The introduction should be one class period. Students will review the expectations of the challenge.
Step 1: Bell Ringer:
· Display a short excerpt from a job posting on the board or screen, without revealing the job title. Ask students to take a few minutes to individually jot down the skills, qualifications and experience they think would be important for a candidate applying for this job.
· Engage students in a brief discussion, allowing them to share their responses.
· Reveal the job title and compare the students' responses with the actual requirements listed in the job posting, highlighting the importance of aligning one’s résumé with the specific job requirements.
Step 2: Show the Career Challenge: Résumé Remix video segment.
· This video is one minute long.
Step 3: Provide students with the Career Challenge: Résumé Remix Project.
· Students have been challenged to create a media-based résumé showcasing their skills, achievements and personality in an engaging and creative way.
· Read aloud the directions and provide any additional requirements you have for the project.
Step 4: Allow students to ask any questions about the project.
Step 5: Provide students with due dates for each section of the project to enter in the applicable spaces within their project.
Step 6: Exit Ticket:
· Students should identify a future career choice and research examples of résumés related to their chosen career and complete the Preliminary Research & Development portion of the project.
· Show a short video or display examples of media-based résumés from professionals in different industries. Discuss the impact and creativity of these résumés.
Step 2: Students should complete the Résumé Development portion of the project.
Step 3: Exit Ticket:
· Students should provide a progress update on the Résumé Development portion of the project.
Audio/Audiovisual Development
Step 1: Bell Ringer:
· Display a selection of media assets such as images, videos and infographics on the board or screen. Ask students to observe the media assets and brainstorm different ways they could be utilized in a résumé to enhance its visual appeal and communicate information effectively.
· Encourage students to share their ideas with the class, discussing how each media asset could be strategically incorporated into a résumé and the impact it could have on capturing the attention of potential employers.
Step 2: Students should complete the Audio/Audiovisual Development portion of the project.
Step 3: Exit Ticket:
· Students should provide a progress update on the Audio/Audiovisual Development portion of the project.
· Instruct students to work with a partner and “pitch” themselves for a job opportunity in 30 seconds. Discuss the importance of making a memorable first impression.
Step 2: Students should complete the Presentation Development portion of the project and present their résumé to the class.
Step 3: Exit Ticket:
· Students should provide a progress update on the Presentation Development portion of the project.
Evaluation & Reflection
Step 1: Bell Ringer:
· Ask students to write down three skills or strengths they believe they possess. Once they have written down their skills, ask them to turn to a partner and share their skills with each other.
· After a few minutes, ask for volunteers to share one of their partner's skills with the class.
· Encourage students to listen actively and offer positive feedback or additional insights about their classmates' skills.
Step 2: Students should complete the Evaluate & Reflect portion of the project.
Step 3: Exit Ticket:
· Students should submit all components of their completed projects.
Accommodations, Modifications & Extensions
Accommodations:
Increase the frequency of instructor check-ins. Provide sentence starters for the Bell Ringer prompts.
Modifications:
Provide students with an outline shell to assist in organizing thoughts. Provide students with assistance with the Résumé Development portion of the lesson.
Extension:
Arrange mock interview sessions where students can practice presenting their media-based résumés and answering interview questions. Pair students as interviewers and interviewees and provide them with sample interview questions. Encourage constructive feedback and discussion after each mock interview to help students improve their communication and presentation skills. Alternatively, create a cross-curricular project with an English class to review writing and editing skills.
