Career Challenge: Résumé Remix
Challenge Overview
You have been challenged to create a media-based résumé showcasing your skills, achievements and personality in an engaging and creative way.
Directions:
1. Identify your future career choice.
2. Research examples of résumés related to your future career choice to view the different components.
3. Using the tool selected by your instructor, develop your résumé based on your future career choice. Include key information in your media-based résumé such as:
· Contact information
· Objective
· Work experience or education
· Skills
· Achievements
· Volunteer work
· References
4. You will choose two audio/audiovisual snippets from the following list which can be embedded in a résumé format for a media-based résumé.
· A video introduction:
- short video (30 to 60 seconds) which introduces yourself, your skills and qualifications and your interest in the career
· Audio testimonials:
- audio clips of peers, teachers or coaches talking about your skills and experience
· Podcast appearances:
- clips from a podcast where you discuss relevant topics related to the career of choice
· Slideshows:
- clips from a presentation you have given related to the career of choice
· Demo reels:
- short clips showcasing your work in a specific area
· Language proficiency:
- audio clips demonstrating your fluency in a foreign language
5. You will create a script or storyboard for the media chosen for your media-based résumé.
6. You will gather or create visuals and media assets to use in your project.
7. Create your media-based résumé.
8. You will present your media-based résumé to the class.
9. Evaluate and reflect on the processes and outcomes.
10. When complete, submit all components of your finished project according to your instructor’s directions.
Preliminary Research & Development Due Date:
Identify your future career choice.
Research examples of résumés related to the future career choice to view the contents of the different component sections.
Brainstorm the answers to key information which will be included in the media-based résumé. Examples include education, skills, interests or volunteer work.
Résumé Development Due Date:
Develop the résumé by writing the appropriate information under the key components of a résumé. Choose two audio/audiovisual snippets to embed in the résumé.
Contact Information: include name, phone number and email address at the top of the résumé
Objective: brief statement highlighting career goals
Work Experience: list previous jobs, including job titles, dates of employment and key responsibilities and achievements
Skills: list of relevant skills, such as computer software proficiency or foreign language fluency
Achievements: list any awards, honors or recognitions which have been received for work or academic achievements
Volunteer Work: list any volunteer work or community service participated in which is relevant to the job
References: list professional references who can vouch for skills and experience
Audio/Audiovisual Development Due Date:
Create a script for the media chosen for the media-based résumé.
Gather or create visuals and media assets to use in the project. Examples include photos, videos, graphics, sound effects or music.
Combine all media assets and embed them into the appropriate places on the résumé. For example, a video introduction will be included in the contact information and a podcast may be included in the skills section.
Presentation Development Due Date:
Prepare the media-based résumé to be presented to the class.
· Ensure there are no spelling or grammatical errors
· Ask a classmate to review the résumé for clarity
· Ensure all media works in the way intended
· Edit out any dead space or errors of the media components
· Present your résumé to the class
Evaluate & Reflect Due Date:
Evaluate and reflect on the process of creating a media-based résumé by answering the following questions.
1. Do you think a media-based résumé is a better way to present yourself for a job? If so, why? If not, why not?
2. What component of the résumé was most difficult to write?
3. What type of media do you prefer to create?
4. What type of media do you prefer to watch and engage with?
5. As you developed your media-based résumé, what are two careers you noticed which may help enhance your résumé? When listing careers, be sure to explain their role in the audiovisual world.
