Create a Formal Linear Design

Project Overview:

You will create a formal linear design, receive feedback and perform a self-evaluation of your arrangement.

Directions:

1.    Your instructor will provide a floral recipe listing all the materials needed for this arrangement. Gather the required tools and materials at your workstation.

2.    Prepare fresh goods by fluffing blooms and removing excess thorns and leaves.

3.    Prepare your container for the arrangement by performing the following:

·      Cut and pre-soak floral foam before placing it in the container and securing it with anchor tape

·      Use floral wire and stem tape to create, reinforce and shape stems as needed

4.    Strategically place fresh goods in the arrangement to create the desired style and silhouette. Refer to the Formal Linear Designs Video Segment for this lesson as needed.

·      Utilize appropriate basing techniques to hide your mechanics and create visual interest

·      Ensure proper placement of materials to use negative space appropriately

·      Incorporate focal-emphasis techniques

5.    Your instructor will divide the class into groups of two or three. Use the project rubric and your knowledge of the principles and elements of design to critique and peer-review your arrangements.

·      Note two to three things which work well in the design

·      Provide two to three suggestions for improvement

·      Take note of feedback for your own design

6.    Using the provided feedback, make any final adjustments to your design.

7.    Write a six to eight sentence paragraph to accompany your arrangement as a self-evaluation. Include the following information:

·      Describe your use of five elements and three principles of design

·      Use the project rubric to grade your arrangement and explain the score you gave yourself

·      Discuss the challenges you faced in this project and any skills you learned

8.    Once completed, turn in your arrangement and self-evaluation according to your instructor’s directions.
